The thyroid gland, which is found at the frontal end of the neck below the structure known as the ‘Adam’s apple’ in men, is an important organ of the body. The thyroid gland has various functions. A number of them are the secretion of significant hormones, stabilizing the body’s metabolism, influencing of growth in youngsters, and enhancing the optimal running of other body organs.

The thyroid is responsible for the production and secretion of a hormone called thyroxine. This hormone is responsible for the regulation of the metabolism. It achieves this by controlling the rate of oxidation in cells. The lessening of the production of this hormone in enough amounts in the body has negative results on a person.

The insufficient production of thyroxine can be tied to the absence of iodine in the system. Wikipedia outlines thyroxine as ’65% iodine’. Iodine is a major initiator in the act of thyroxine production. When insufficient iodine is produced, one can suffer with a swelling in the neck called Goiter. According to the Mayo Clinic staff, this occurs when the thyroid gland grows larger than normal. Although goiters are usually painless, a huge goiter can cause a cough and make it difficult for someone to swallow or breathe. In the US, where most of the people use iodized salt, goiter is more frequently because of the over- or underproduction of thyroid hormones or to nodules that develop in the gland itself. When there is an inadequate quantity of thyroxine as a result of a unusual thyroid gland’s inability to produce thyroxine, it is known as hypothyroidism.

Additionally, when there’s an inadequate amount of thyroxine in the body, the metabolic functions are interfered with and the result’s a decrease in the optimal working of the body organs and system. Kids who are lacking a major amount of thyroxine in the body can end up becoming stunted in their growth and suffer with compromised brain development. This is often known as cretinism.

In addition, hypothyroidism due to an abnormal thyroid has been documented to rise in ladies during pregnancy, after delivery and during menopause. The common characteristics of these diseases is that they make an attempt to make the thyroid gland useless. In thyroiditis which is handed down, the antibodies in the body attack and fight the thyroid cells.

An abnormal thyroid gland can be infected with diverse diseases apart from hypothyroidism. Other diseases include Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, hyperthyroidism, inflammation of the thyroid, tumor, amyloidosis, and sarcoidosis.

Hyperthroidism, another illness, related to an abnormal thyroid is just the over-secretion of thyroxine. Grave’s disease, a kind of thyroiditis, is the most common reason for hyperthyroidism. Also referred to as Graves-Basedow disease, it is located typically in middle-aged women. Hurthle cell adenoma, or thyroid adenoma, is another thyroid disease. Plummer’s disease, a form of goiter, is another commonly occurring thyroid illness.
