Separating and extracting metals in the treatment of metal poisoning is a process known as chelation. Binding a metal ion to a chemical compound with the intention of forming a ring is known as chelate. The theory is that a ring, being somewhat round, sort of rolls off other atoms and is then flushed out of the system. Removing certain toxins is what Bio Chelat is supposed to do.

Using poisonous gas during World War I, known as Lewisite, presented a reason to remove those toxins from the victims. A modification was made in the 60′s that replaced the other two as it had even less side effects, and is the standard US treatment for the three major metal poisoning treatments.

Research by the Soviets introduced another treatment which treats for mercury and arsenic. Although it is experimental with the US FDA, and a common nutritional supplement.

In 1998, the US Federal Trade Commission took the ACAM to task over their advertising claims that EDTA could be used in treating heart disease. In 1999, the ACAM agreed to stop those advertisements, while EDTA is still approved by the US FDA for poison treatment.

So, natural ingredients do exist for health related chelation, but do not expect the mainstream medical society to join hands with the alternative medicine community, any time soon. As a word of caution, always check with your physician before starting any over the counter products, be they natural or otherwise. You want to make sure you do not have any serious medical conditions that might react to any unknown products when traditional treatment should have been used.
